Reflections on a momentous week

A lot can happen in a week and the week of the 5th-9th of September 2022 will surely be remembered as one of the most momentous in British history. On Tuesday Liz Truss was formally appointed as the new Prime Minister and by Friday the country had a new monarch, King Charles III.

The sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II, our longest reigning monarch at over 70 years on the throne, is rightly being described as the end of an era. Over those 70 years the country has gone through enormous social, cultural and political change, yet in many ways the Queen remained a stabilising constant throughout.

Regardless of one’s views on the monarchy as an institution, it’s hard to not be impressed and grateful for the steadfast dedication and service Queen Elizabeth II gave to this country.

In everything we do, we can perhaps be guided by this these words from the Queen:

“When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead, they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future.”

Turning to our Protection Guru content from last week, we kicked things off on Monday with the announcement of the individual adviser, adviser firm/networks and prestige awards shortlist for our upcoming 2022 Protection Guru Awards. With less than a month to go now until the awards ceremony and luncheon, we look forward to welcoming everyone and announcing the winners on the day. You can view all the shortlists on the links below:

On Tuesday was brought news of a recent update from AIG regarding support they’re offering to clients experiencing financial hardship. Their ‘flexible policy request’, first introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, allows clients to reduce their cover and premiums for up to 6 months, without having to fully cancel the policy. AIG have now made this a permanent contractual feature of their protection plans, for both new and existing clients.

We turned to income protection for Wednesday’s insight and specifically which insurers offer suitable cover for teachers. With the upcoming Income Protection Awareness Week, now is a good time to be reading up on all things income protection and you’ll see a lot more IP focused content from us over the coming weeks.

The month of September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, so to mark this important awareness campaign, on Thursday was published an insight examining how critical illness plans cover cervical cancer. The insight highlighted the work of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and the importance of cervical screening and included information from our panel of doctors on how current critical illness policies cover the condition.
