Another major partnership to grow protection advice and au revoir to a fantastic colleague.

Another major partnership to grow protection advice and au revoir to a fantastic colleague.

Presently there is no such thing as a quiet week at Protection Guru. Our biggest announcement of the week is our partnership with the Consumer Duty Alliance to run regular Forums to help wealth advisers grow their protection knowledge and specifically to understand how Consumer Duty has changed what the FCA now expect to be included in a protection advice process.

The first such session takes place tomorrow – Tuesday 29th October, and will include:

Keith Richards, Chief Executive of the Consumer Duty Alliance

Emma Thomson, Director of both the Women in Protection Network and the Protection Distributors Group

Alan Richardson, Product Director at LifeSearch

From the preparation calls it is clear that this is going to be a very informative session with a wide range of approaches to protection being discussed.

Also on Protection Guru last week Jo Legg wrote a really important article looking at  Are all children eligible for children’s critical illness cover? The reality is that with some insurers there can be children left out. This article should be essential reading for any adviser discussing Children’s Critical Illness.

In a timely fashion that was followed the next day by Amanda Newman Smith writing on What parents need to know about protection. This highlights many key facts to share with parents about why Children’s Critical Illness can be so valuable.

Emma Thomson who will be joining us on our above Forum, wrote a powerful and personal summary of her own experiences with cancer. Life gave me lemons so now I’m making lemonade. This is again an article every financial adviser should read, there are essential points to consider that will make you think about how you give advice.

Closing the week Jo Legg provided a valuable reminder of our November online training sessions on how to give protection advice in the context of Consumer Duty you can find full details and register for these sessions from this link.

The dates, times and high-level subjects are as follows – these sessions are free to all advisers:

  • 29th October 10am-11am – How to select the best value Critical Illness plans for your client.
  • 6th November 10am – 11am – How to assess value in life and mortgage protection advice including value added benefits.
  • 13th November 10am -11am – Why Critical Illness plans should be reviewed annually as part of Consumer Duty, how to achieve this quickly and effectively.
  • 19th November 2pm – 3pm – Providing Income Protection advice for Mortgage and Wealth Management advisers.

Finally, I want to say a huge thank you to Adam Higgs who had his final day with Protection Guru last Friday. Adam played a huge role in making Protection Guru what it is today, including building the initial site and getting it live within about 48 hours of my originally coming up with the concept. Perhaps even more importantly, Adam played a huge role with Quentin Clasquin and myself in adapting Protection Guru to become the industry Covid information hub early in 2020.

I’m sure Adam will be a huge success in his new role at St James‘s Place and I look forward to collaborating with him further in the future.
