Protection News Weekly Roundup: Top Stories You Might Have Missed – 24-02-2025

If you would like a vision of how Financial Advice is evolving, it is well worth reading this article to the end, as last week we published the Best in Show demos from our sister site AdviserSoftware.com’s recent Empowering Advice Through Technology conference. Links to some amazing advice tech that can help you work smarter are at the end of this piece but in the meantime let’s quickly go over what you missed on Protection Guru last week if you did not visit the site every day.
On Monday of last week, we started by looking at Which income protection plans pay a lump sum on death? This article highlights some major variations between providers, so well worth reviewing.
To tie in with National Heart Month, Tuesday saw us share the second part of our doctors analysis of The Evolving Definition of Heart Attack in Critical Illness Policies.
This particularly highlights ongoing ambiguities in the 2023 ABI update which our doctors say conflict with changes in clinical practice. Personally, I find it disappointing, but not surprising that the Association of British Insurers still has not got its act together on this one. It seems to me like this risks poor customer outcomes with the insurers trade body still referencing tests medical practitioners no longer use. Fortunately, most insurers are ignoring the ABI on this point and Protection Guru retains our doctors so advisers can be aware of issues like this. I would argue anyone giving advice on Critical Illness plans needs to understand these issues so would urge you to read both our latest commentary and part one of the study.
Later that day Matt Chapman shared a tremendous piece on Why GP services are a game-changer for client engagement. Another exceptional article and one all advisers should read for different reasons to the piece above. Some outstanding advice here on how to build your relationship with clients.
Our sister company AdviserSoftware.com has recently conducted consumer research on the demand for such services from consumers as part of our Building the Business Case for Digital Advice programme and the results are really encouraging. Look out for separate analysis on that soon.
On Wednesday it was time to look at Why should all parents consider children’s critical illness cover? This provides some great background in advance of our Protection Forum on Children’s Critical Illness when we will have some great experts talking about their approach to the subject. If you have not already booked your ticket you can do so here.
Later that day we asked How Well Do You Know HSBC’s Life & Critical Illness cover?
Thursday took us to sharing the second part of our Protection Forum recap The impact of the Budget on Protection & IHT . Lots of tremendous technical information here and you can read key insights from Zurich’s Andy Woollon and Toby Cordon of London & Country as well as listen to the full audio transcript. Part one of the session can be found here. Later that day it was time to turn to Legal & General and ask How Well Do You Know their Umbrella Benefits.
We wrapped up the week with Jason Coleman looking at How do insurers compare for Free Cover. Another study full of vital information for understanding how well your clients will be protected before plans are fully in force. This was a great precursor for our last summary of the week which was for our training events with advisers.
It is worth recognising that Protection Guru Pro not only allows you to carry out whole of market research on product quality and pricing via our iPipeline integration, but for those insurers who work with UnderwriteMe, you can then click through to submit the case and get it in force in minutes rather than days or even weeks when there are underwriting disclosures. Attend one of our training courses and we will give you a 60- day free trial for the full Protection Guru Pro service enabling you to transform the quality of your advice, the speed of processing cases and your income from protection.
