Protection Guru has worked with Zurich to create a concise objective analysis of their Accelerate product.

Zurich in their own words

Accelerate provides access to experts from around the world to offer a package of medical services for cancer, heart and neurological conditions.

It gives customers fast access to consultations and diagnostics. It can help them access the latest precision cancer medicine and cancer clinical trials, as well as providing quick treatment abroad at some of the leading hospitals in the world at a time when accessing the NHS can prove challenging.

Customers have complete flexibility when it comes to using any of the six services that Accelerate has to offer, choosing which service to use and when, with the option to combine Accelerate services with private or public healthcare, offering customers greater choice and control over their healthcare decisions.

When customers get a quick diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan they achieve peace of mind but when customers don’t get their conditions investigated, diagnosed, and treated quickly their clinical outcomes are worse.

Although only launched in May 2024 Accelerate has already been recognised by receiving the Protection Review Innovation Award and Best New Product Award, as well as by Protection Guru, where it won the Doctors Award.

To provide the services that Accelerate delivers Zurich has partnered with an established and leading provider of Health Care Solutions, our partner is Further. Who are Further?

Zurich Accelerate – six services

Virtual consultant

We all know that sometimes it takes longer than we would like to get an appointment with a consultant.

Accelerate provides fast access to UK Consultants once a customer/patient has received a referral letter from their General Practitioner (GP) for cancer, heart or a neurological condition.

The customer chooses who they see at a time to suit them, with a case manager there to support them throughout.

Following the consultation the customer receives a report confirming the outcome, or next steps.

Second Medical opinion

If a customer is unsure about a diagnosis or the treatment being recommended to them they can request a Second Medical Opinion (SMO).

A consultant will give a comprehensive review of their current medical evidence, diagnosis, and treatment plan.

The consultant will either provide the customer with peace of mind that the diagnosis and treatment plan that they have in place is correct or they may recommend that additional investigations are undertaken or that other treatment options are considered.

This offers customers a wider choice of options when considering their health care decisions as well as access to international experts.

Private diagnostics plus

Medical tests are usually needed to establish a diagnosis but there can be a delay from first seeing a GP to receiving the results.

Private Diagnostics Plus allows a customer to book an appointment at a UK Diagnostic centre straight away.

Access to quick tests and some tests that may not be available through public healthcare.

The customer can choose a testing centre convenient to them, be that close to their home or work.

Once the tests have been performed and the results are available with the Consultant the customer had their virtual consultation with, the Consultant will call them to discuss the results and a report will be provided to help determine the next steps.

Precision cancer medicine

There are over 200 types of cancer, but each tumour is unique.

Precision Cancer Medicine provides customers with support and personalised treatment plans by using the latest tumour profiling technology.

This profiling helps to establish the molecular make-up of the tumour (including whether there is a hereditary element). This understanding improves the selection and effectiveness of the treatment as well as a more accurate prognosis.

Where there is a hereditary element established siblings and children of the customer may also undergo confirmatory testing and receive supportive counselling.

Cancer clinical trial support

The Cancer Clinical Trial Support Service helps customers navigate the complicated process of clinical trials, providing ongoing support as they access new or alternative treatments, drugs, and therapies that may not yet be available to everyone.

The service provides help in identifying potential trials, applying for them and if accepted on to a trial covering travel and accommodation throughout the trial within the UK or Worldwide.

Global treatment plus

When treatment is required speed in starting that treatment may be critical. Global Treatment Plus allows customers to by-pass the backlogs within private and public healthcare by receiving the treatment abroad. All costs of travel, accommodation are fully meet with a daily allowance payable to cover incidental expenses.

A customer using Global Treatment Plus may be accompanied, (with all travel and accommodation costs being met in full and a daily allowance payable to travel companions), by two companions where the customer is an adult and by up to three companions where the claim is for a child.

comments from our doctors

Zurich’s Accelerate proposition aims to deliver a faster, more flexible option for urgent diagnosis and treatment. Accelerate provides a reassuring safety net to NHS provision– offering diagnostics, treatment abroad, access to second opinions, and treatments not widely available through public services. By complementing existing public healthcare provisions, this solution could help patients receive timely, effective care when they need it most.

In a period where the NHS faces unprecedented pressures and waiting times have reached record levels, it is encouraging to see an insurer respond with such innovation. For this reason, Zurich Accelerate was recognised with the Doctor’s Award at the 2024 Protection Guru Awards.
